With a name that conjures up the thought of a skin that looks beyond perfect, I was intrigued by the Clinique Beyond Perfecting foundation ($40, available here), with its unique applicator and two-in-one concealer and foundation formula.
Clinique has long been a favourite brand of mine when it comes to foundations formula and colour selection/options. Owned by the behemoth Estee Lauder which includes brands like MAC Cosmetics, and Bobbi Brown, they are truly a company that dedicates itself to providing many colour options for women of colour with 40 shades available on Sephora at the time of writing.
Unfortunately, the colour selection for this foundation is different than their existing range. I found it took a bit of guesswork even though I own one of their formula’s already. For reference, I use the shade WN30 Biscuit and I’ve provided shade comparison towards the end of the post.
The clear, glass both packaging is a dream for anyone looking for their shade in-store. It’s bulkier than most foundations I own despite having the same volume (1oz) and the heavy glass packaging automatically rules it out for travelling. I dislike it as the doe-foot applicator makes it impossible to use up completely – it’s hard to scrape up the excess product when you reach the bottom of the product.
The foundation is applied with an enormous doe-foot applicator you would normally expect to find for a lipgloss. I wasn’t sure how I would warm up to this unique applicator particularly considering that I like to use every last drop of the product before I throw it out. The applicator makes it feel like an extra work/step in the process so I usually dab it and use a BeautyBlender to spread the product out without it feeling to thick or heavy on the skin.
The doe-foot applicator is perfect to use as a concealer though you might want to use with a light hand given how much bigger the applicator is compared to what you would normally use.
Using the applicator doesn’t make or break the product for me but it’s nice that you can just take the product out and apply directly on the face. No warming up on the back of your hand or pumping it out on the back of your hand risking smearing on your clothes.
The formula is why I keep coming back to the brand over the years. The creamy texture lends itself to a higher coverage but can feel pretty drying on the skin. The closest texture I can compare this to is the MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation.
For some additional reference, I wear the following shades in other brands:
- Laura Mercier Photo Ready Silk Creme Foundation in Bamboo Beige
- Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation in 2W1 Sand
- Clinique Even Better Foundation in #25 Buff
- Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Foundation in Y245 / Y315 depending on the time of the year
- Dior Star Foundation in #21 Linen
- Dior Diorskin Forever Foundation in #20 Light Beige
